BBQ Sauce

I think most people grew up having BBQ sauce as a staple in their house,  I know that I did. The problem is most of the ones on the market are filled with sugar, colouring agents, preservatives and other not so great ingredients. Due to this I haven’t had BBQ sauce in quite sometime and I’m tired of being without any BBQ sauce especially since it is BBQ season here in Canada. That is why I decided to do something about it and make some homemade BBQ sauce and I was pleasantly surprised by the result!

A couple of notes. If you used canned tomatoes over jarred tomatoes make sure they are BPA free. Once you have made your BBQ sauce toss it into a jar to store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.


28oz of Tomatoes
6oz of Tomato Paste
2 tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar
4 tbsp of Maple Syrup
1 White Onion
3 Cloves of Garlic
1 tsp Cumin
1/2 tsp of Salt
1/8 tsp of Cayenne
1 tbsp of Coconut Oil
1 tbsp of water


1. Peel the onion and garlic and chop
2. Turn on a deep pan to medium and melt Coconut oil. Once melted add the chopped onion and 1 tbsp of water and cover. Cook for 3 minutes then add the chopped garlic and continue to cook for another 3 minutes. You will know you are done once the onions are slightly translucent.
3. Add the rest of the ingredients to the pan and stir until mixed. Simmer for 10 minutes.
4. Let the sauce cook slightly and add to a high powered blender or food processor. Blend until smooth.
5. Add the sauce back to the pan and cook on as low as possible for 30mins stirring occasionally.
6. Boom BBQ Sauce!!
