Benefits and Uses: Coconut Oil

benefits of coconut oil

Let me just start by saying I love coconut and everything to do with coconut and after reading my lists below hopefully you will start to use it if you don’t already or use it in a new way.

Reasons to use it:

Increases weight loss
Coconut oil is filled with medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) studies have shown that intake of MCTs can increase fat burning after consumption.[1 & 2]

Kills the bad guys
Coconut oil is antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antiprotozal. That means it can kill nasty bacteria, fungus, yeast, etc. helping you to stay healthy![3]

Energy boost
As mentioned coconut oil is filled with MCTs, these are burned easily for energy and produce a lot of it. Taking a spoon of coconut oil when you’re in a slump can help give you that energy boost you need.[4]

Brain support/protection
It has been shown that coconut oil due to being high in MCTs can help to fuel the brain and protective/beneficial effects for patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.[5&6] Also, the phytonutrients and antioxidants in coconut oil can protect the brain from oxidative damage.

Can lower stress
Due to coconut oil’s polyphenols and MCTs it can help to protect the brain from the effects of stress as well as helping to increase the antioxidant levels in the brain.[7]

Ways to use it:

Before workouts
As discussed above due to the high levels of MCTs in coconut oil it is readily used as energy in the body. Both Lauren and I have used coconut oil before our workouts with great success. It helps to give you a constant level of energy throughout. I like to take 1 tbsp about 30-45 minutes before my workout.

As lubricant
That’s right coconut oil makes a great lubricant for sex. It has also been shown to have an antiviral effect against chlamydia, herpes and gonorrhea (this shouldn’t be your only form of protection). Also, due to its antifungal properties it can help to prevent yeast infections.[3] However, be careful if you’re using a latex condom as it will wear it down, increasing the risk of it breaking. *Please practice safe sex* Before you use coconut oil for lubrication, make sure you’re not allergic by rubbing it on a less delicate area.

For cooking
Due to the properties of coconut oil it is great to use for all types of cooking. Plus you can even make your own chocolate from it! If you do not like the taste of coconut oil you can get a deodorized version (no taste or smell).

For skin & hair health
Coconut oil is amazing for both skin and hair health. Rub it onto your skin as a natural moisturizer or you can use on your head for healthier hair!

For cuts
Due to the antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antiprotozal properties you can use coconut oil to help naturally sterilize cuts or scrapes.

I hope you now realize why I love coconut oil so much. Hopefully you will fall in love with it too.

If you love coconut oil for other reasons, let us know what they are!
