Lower Stress

Be the positive change you want to see in your life! Give that urge to change a powerful voice, one that brings growth, strength, and love to your life and your beliefs. I am going to talk to you about how you can use positive affirmations to not only reduce stress and help your health but to reshape the world as you see it.

Positive Affirmations: 

A positive affirmation is a positive statement that you repeat (in your head, out loud, or write down) to replace negative self talk with positive self affirming talk. You might be thinking, how much can repeating a statement really help me? Well, let me tell you what it is all about because affirmations have changed my life. They are a simple way to invite happiness, and joy into your life while erasing negative habits.

What are we trying to do with affirmations? We are trying to re-write negative self talk, negative beliefs, and negative habits.

Ask yourself honestly, how much time do you spend lost in thoughts throughout the day? Probably a lot. Or, maybe you haven’t really noticed. We all have an internal narrator that creates stories, tells us how to feel about situations, tells us how capable we are, and evaluates our life based on our past events and perceived future. This voice can dictate how we feel about the world around us. So, if this voice is negative, critical, stressed or afraid – the world can be a scary, intimidating, overwhelming and/or unsure place. This voice not only dictates how we feel about the world but can also can keep us from being fully and wholly present.  We create beliefs about the world and habitual ways of responding to situations based on these beliefs. If these beliefs are negative then that creates a negative picture. If these beliefs are positive then that creates a positive picture. The trick is bringing control into your life.

Learning how much of a difference taking conscious control over my thoughts could make in my life was a huge game changer for me. Possibly one of the most important lessons I’ve ever learned. I realized I am not only in control of my life but am also capable of releasing stress, and experiencing love, joy and acceptance everywhere I go. I had always thought that some situations would just always be stressful or negative – I didn’t recognize that the way I saw the situation could change how I experienced it. Attitude is everything. To really change my attitude, I had to break those nasty limiting beliefs and habits. To break those beliefs and habits, I had to start identifying them.

How Limiting Beliefs Affect Us: 

Limiting beliefs and habits come in all different shapes and sizes. I am not capable. I’m not confident. I’m not good enough. I’m not heathy. I am a victim. I am afraid. I’m not financially secure. I’m not safe. I’m not lovable. Someone else could do it better. This thing that happened in the past means I can’t – . The list goes on. Sometimes these negatives can also be emotions that we have held onto and not dealt with in the present moment, such as anger, guilt, and resentment.

How much can these negative thoughts be effecting your life? Not only can they make you feel like something is out of reach, but, according to author/teacher/lecturer Louise Hay, negative mental patters are often even the cause of physical illness. She strongly believes that dis-ease can be caused by negative mental patterns and can likewise be reversed by reversing these mental patters. The idea here is that negative mental patters will eventually manifest as physical symptoms to draw attention to the issue that needs to be dealt with. Unless we deal with the mental aspect of the physical problem, that issue will fail to heal completely and continue coming back. How does she know? She teaches based on endless research and personal experience. Louise shares in her book “How to heal your body” that she was diagnosed with cancer of the vagina. She shares that when she was a child she was abused. She strongly believed that her cancer manifested because she had not fully dealt with the negative patterns relating to this abuse. She said she knew that if she got surgery, the cancer would simply return if she didn’t first deal with her negative mental patterns. So, she convinced the doctors to give her 6 months to work on herself before considering treatment. In that time, by working on her mental patters and working on her nutrition, she completely healed her cancer. This is of course an extreme example of how negative mental patters can manifest but a powerful story that she was courageous to share with the world to help others have confidence in their ability to heal themselves. Her book “Heal your Body” is a wonderful resource for healing. It has a fantastic chart listing problems, the probable mental causes, and positive affirmation to work on that issue. I’d highly recommend picking it up! See the end of this blog for some examples!

If negative mental patters can affect how you see the world and can affect your health, what can you do about it?

Take Control Back:

  1. Learn to identify and be aware of your internal narrator. Being able to see the negative is the first step to overcoming it.
  2. Be willing to let go of that belief, habit, mental pattern, and security blanket. You have to want to change and you have to believe that you can change! If this is difficult to do on your own, don’t be afraid to ask for help. I am always happy to offer guidance.
  3. Repeat positive affirmations in your head or out loud. Do this with love, conviction and feeling.

When you first start saying positive affirmations, be aware that the negative voice in your head may fight back at first. This is completely okay. You are not doing anything wrong. You are working to create a new thought pattern. The idea is that you will repeat this pattern over and over until it starts to become a truth for you. The more you do it, the less your negative narrator can tell you that it isn’t true. A good starting goal is to pick one affirmation and repeat it once a day for a month and see how this helps you feel. For me, I found that sentences that made me uncomfortable at first, would make me smile before the month was up. This helped me realize I was on the right track.

I started with one affirmation and slowly over time added in new ones. My first affirmation and still a favourite of mine is “I accept myself unconditionally right now.” I got the idea from a documentary (if I remember the name I’ll update this later!). I wrote it on a post it note and put it on my mirror. I made a goal to look at myself in the mirror and say that to myself every day with feeling. Give it a try and see how your comfort level changes with that powerful statement over the course of a month.

The best part about all of this is YOU ARE IN CONTROL! Stay strong. Stay determined. Do not get overwhelmed. Embrace the power of your words. Work on introducing the positives one or two sentences at a time! You can reduce your stress, improve your health, your relationships, and your life by uplifting your narrator and embracing positivity! We believe in you!

Problem: Probable mental cause: Affirmation

Fatigue: Resistance, boredom. Lack of love for what one does: I am enthusiastic about life and filled with energy and enthusiasm.

Anxiety: No trusting the flow and process of life: I love and approve of myself and I trust the process of life. I am safe.

Constipation: Refusing to release old ideas. Stuck in the past. Sometimes stinginess: As I release the past, the new and fresh and vital enter. I allow life to flow through me.
